Book Meme Day 09

A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

In short, this book is about a con man. He visits various restaurants and purposely causes himself to choke while eating, which lures good Samaritans into saving him. He then keeps a detailed list of everyone who saved him and sends them letters about fictional bills he is unable to pay. The people feel so sorry for him that they send him cards and letters asking him about how he's doing and even continue to send him money to help him with the bills. The other great theme of this book is how he maintains sexual gratification through visiting people at sexual addiction meetings and pretending to be an addict. The humor is just hysterically dark and full of satire. Much like all of Palahniuk's books (for those not familiar, he wrote Fight Club), the book ends with a severe twist which makes one question the author's mind. This book made me go out and purchase Palahniuk's entire library and read the whole thing over the course of a month. As of now, there is only one of his books I would not recommend because it is a VERY difficult read, but the rest are fantastic.

First off, I love your icon. You have some of the best icons.

If ever given the chance, don't see the movie first. The movie DESTROYED the book. I was so excited for it and the book was so much better. The humor in it is just great.

Thank you! I take pride in my humorous icons that I have come across. lol

And this just validates my belief that movies are never as good as the books. Ever! Rarely does it meet my expectations but never exceeds, IMO. haha

Yeah, this movie adaption was pretty bad.

You had a Star Wars icon and a Big Lebowski one that I sent to my husband one day just to make him laugh. Those were great!

I had been wondering about this book. I loved 'Fight Clb' so I know I liked the author, but the story seemed iffy. I'll definitely add it to my reading list!!

All of his stories seem that way, but they are all as twisted and awesome as Fight Club. The ending in the book of Fight Club is actually different, so I would suggest reading it as well. However, do NOT start reading his books with the book Pygmy. Or Rant. Those two are written in very unique formats, making them incredibly difficult to read. I would also really recommend Invisible Monsters and Lullaby.

Yeah, I read the book about a year ago and really liked it. I will definitely have to check out more of his books!

I read this book a year ago, I think, and I had no memory of any actual plot line until I read your summary. But, yeah, I remember finding it really interesting.

hmmm...that book sounds interesting. I'm gonna have to go out and check it out. :)

It's much better than the way I summarized it. The humor in it is so dark, you can't help but just love it.
