Book Meme Day 14 and 15
Days 14 and 15

So I have to list a couple of these today cuz I was dealing with tornados and blackouts this weekend. It was basically, "Please don't knock our power out, please don't knock our power out, please don't let the tornado kil us..." It was fun.

Day 14 - Favorite book of your favorite writer

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

I'm probably going to catch some shit for this, but it's the way it is. This is the book that introduced me to Bret Easton Ellis, which may be a good or bad thing, depending on who you ask. For those of you who have seen the movie but not read the book, there is a HUGE difference. I'll never forget when I heard they were making this into a film and I was like, "They can't really do that. No one would ever show it." I found out about this when I was sixteen and read an article about controversial pieces of literature. This book is very difficult to get into, as the first third of it does nothing but describe literally EVERYTHING surrounding the characters in the 1980's yuppie culture. Then the second third hits and well, it gets downright terrifying. I have never in my life literally had to stop reading something because it made me feel like I was going to vomit, but a specific scene (the rat scene, for those that have read it), forced me to take a break. The strange thing about it all is that throughout the massive amounts of pornography and horrific accounts of violence, the book is so well written that you can't help but like it. I have re-read the book several times, skipping over the rat scene, since then.

Day 15 - Favorite male character

Patrick Bateman

Close Runners Up: Alex from A Clockwork Orange and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights

The anti-hero of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho and Lunar Park. I love this character. Never have I read of a character with a sheer lack of emotion. Reading about the multiple horrific crimes he partakes in (or doesn't parktake in) through second person rather than third makes it all that much more frightening. I remember when I found out he was in Lunar Park and just bolted from work to the bookstore after calling all over town for a copy of it.
