To anyone who writes fanfic...

Ugh, I need someone to vent to.  Things like this are the reason I don't write a lot of fanfic.

I got an email this morning regarding my latest fanfic, telling me that the characters I wrote were nothing like the characters on the shows, based on their actions.  This is why I hate writing fanfic.  When I write my own fiction, I own the characters and can do whatever the hell I want with them.  With other people's characters, there's that whole thing about keeping within their boundaries.

I am neither Eric Kripke nor am I Joss Whedon, but I feel that I am doing a halfway decent job with the characters I am writing about.  They are my version of someone else's characters, hence the whole AU thing.

For once, I went back and told this to the person.  I wasn't snotty about the remark, I simply told them why I wrote the way I did.  Funny, they didn't respond.  And I found out that they have written nothing but similar reviews to other people and have written nothing of their own.  So that makes me feel better.

Thanks for listening to me vent.  And to all those on LJ who have left comments on my fanfics, you are awesome.  I have found nothing but decent comments from you, so thank you.
